Some characters are commissioned. Zeljko sprouted.
He started as a doodle of a cabbage with eyebrows and grew into a fully sculpted, rigged and animated character. Every part of him — from the bark of his staff to the veins in his leaf crown — was built from scratch in 3D, as proof of what an original mascot can look like.
The Concept
Zeljko is a small guardian of the garden — a spirit grown from a cabbage, with a twig staff and a crown of leaves. The goal was simple: build an original character with enough personality to carry animated shorts, mascot work and brand storytelling on his own.
Nobody briefed him. He started as a doodle and survived because he passed the only test that matters for a character: you can tell what he wants before he moves. Everything after that was execution.

The Lore
Zeljko is a Zelyak — a garden spirit no bigger than a child’s hand, born from a seed that waited too long in the soil, from a garden someone stopped tending, or from the care of a person who watered the same flower every day until that care stayed behind in the earth.
Zelyaci work at night, alone, where nobody is watching. They do not make a plant grow — they help it not to give up. Three rules they were never taught: care even when no one sees you; do not be the garden for it, help it become itself; return to the earth when the time comes. What they fear is not death but forgetting — a Zelyak that stops caring keeps its body and loses itself.
That is where the design comes from. The leaves are not a costume, they are the character: drawn tight when he is afraid, opening slowly when he is calm. The staff is not a weapon — it is for walking, and for moving soil around a root. The golden eyes belong to someone who has spent a long time listening.
The Process
From first sketches to final shot: blockout and sculpting in Blender, detailing in ZBrush, hand-painted textures in Photoshop. Then rigging, foliage grooming, lighting and rendering back in Blender, with the final grade in DaVinci Resolve.
The sculpt was not the hard part. The leaves were. Foliage has to read as a crown from the front, as hair in silhouette, and still move like a plant when he turns — which means the groom, the rig and the shader had to be solved together rather than one after the other.
Drag the slider — topology and rig on one side, the finished sculpt on the other. Clean edge flow is what lets a face hold an expression instead of collapsing when it moves.

The Assets
What exists now is not a picture of Zeljko. It is Zeljko.
Sculpt and topology. A clean, deformable mesh rather than a one-pose statue — he holds up in close-up and in motion.
Rig. A working control rig, so a new pose or a new shot costs a day, not a rebuild.
Groom and textures. Hand-painted maps and a foliage groom that survives a camera moving right up to his face.
Look. A locked lighting and grade setup, so anything rendered next year still matches what was rendered last year.
That is the difference between an illustration and a character. One is finished. The other is ready.
The Result
A fully rigged, render-ready character used for animated loops and stills. Characters like Zeljko work hard as brand mascots: a face an audience remembers faster than any logo, and one that can be re-posed for every campaign instead of redrawn for every campaign.

Why the Studio Makes Originals
Nobody paid for Zeljko, and that is the point. Client work rewards what a studio can already do. Originals are where it raises its own ceiling — sculpting, grooming, cloth and character animation all got harder here first, and the product work got better because of it.
If you need a mascot, a character or a face for a brand, this is what that looks like when it is built rather than drawn once.
